Accountant-Wisconsin Conference Associate Treasurer
Job responsibilities include:
- Auditing of local churches. This requires some people skills, but provides a great opportunity to get mileage, travel and see the state, and be home every night. There are approximately 90 or so churches that need to be visited every 2 years. The term "audit" is a bit generous. They are essential reviews or check ups for the local often volunteer church treasurers. We're looking for banks to be reconciled, entry methods to be correct, record retention to be accurate, and ensuring that some basic controls are being followed. A good audit can be done in 3 or 4 hours.
- Receipting of funds/Bank Reconciliations/ Simple JV's- There will be some learning curve, the actual accounting is not that hard. It's a lot of data entry, but sometimes data entry and sorting are just what accountants want to do.
- Insurance Management/Risk Management- Most policy decisions are dictated by policy but there is still a lot of educating that needs to be done to pastors and local churches as well as financial management to equitable share the cost of the insurance policy with all the constituent churches.
Skills/ Characteristics Preferred:
- Have a strong commitment to the faith, and be willing to recognize that church members will view them as a church leader. It's a lot easier than being a pastor, but it isn't just a job where your personal decisions do not affect your professional life. We have to be willing to represent Christ and the beliefs of the members who pay our salaries.
- Have flexibility and a can do attitude. Church treasury work allows you to have
so much variety in your work. The church runs schools, churches, a camp, a thrift
store, travels, and will on a whim may be donated or become involved with an unknowable
variety of projects. The short is that if you believe that you can learn, you can.
We tend to work as a team, and if you find an area that you are really good at; your
job responsibilities may grow in those areas and shrink in others.
- Have a good grasp of technology. This is something that lacking within many church workers and because it was a skill of mine; my absence leaves that hole in our team.
Job Perks:
Roughly $56,000 starting pay with education but no experience
An initial 2 weeks per year vacation time.
4 day work week (2 weeks can really stretch with 4 day weeks)
Individual private office (Our building is very nice)
Educational Subsidy
Affordable Healthcare
